Priorities for District 40:

  • Focusing on public service by providing assistance to those she represents.
  • Utilizing her position on the Health and Human Services Committee to find ways to lower health care costs, while providing greater access to health care coverage.
  • As a member of the Government Affairs Committee, work with Carson City government to assist in any way that she can with the meth problem in our city.
  • Support efforts to provide greater protections for our seniors and our youth by protecting against fraudulent activities perpetrated on our seniors and defending against the abuse and neglect of our children.
  • Sponsoring legislation increasing alternative energy generation in our state.
  • As chair of the Assembly Committee on Education, Bonnie will continue her efforts on education reform, with an emphasis on our high schools. Examples of reform include providing greater opportunities for our students through expanded Career and Technical classes with greater access to advanced placement classes and creating 9th grade smaller learning communities at our largest high schools.

On the Issues:

Statewide Efforts

As our assemblywoman, Bonnie will fight to ensure that our transportation and water needs will be met. Bonnie will work to protect our natural resources, and she supports the development of renewable energy, and remains staunchly opposed to the Yucca Mountain nuclear dump.

Education

As a former Nevada Teacher of the Year and former Nevada PTA President, Bonnie has worked to raise standards for students and teachers, increase parental involvement, and bring the Pledge of Allegiance back to Nevada classrooms.

Jobs

Bonnie is a pro-business legislator who has worked with local officials to help bring jobs to the area. She has worked to diversify our local economy and to stop unnecessary state and local regulations imposed on small businesses.

Health Care

Bonnie will work to make health care more affordable. She supports increasing tax incentives for businesses that offer health care to their employees and utilizing existing federal funds to help small businesses afford health care coverage. Bonnie is also committed to continuing efforts to lower the cost of prescription drugs.

  • Provide up to a $100 subsidy per employee for small businesses to help pay for health insurance premiums
  • Creation of two state-run Web sites to enable consumers to comparison shop for prescriptions and hospital
  • Regulate how hospitals can collect debt from uninsured patients to address the practice of outsourcing debt collections to agencies that charge excessive interest rates.

Taxes

Raising two sons on a teacher’s salary, Bonnie had to be a fiscal conservative; and she will watch the public checkbook as carefully as she watches her own. Bonnie has never voted for a major tax increase, and she supported capping property taxes to protect homeowners, renters and seniors.

  • Bonnie will continue to support the cap on property taxes and will oppose any new taxes

Bonnie Parnell is a leader we can trust. Bonnie was named one of the "outstanding" freshman legislators and was selected an "Emerging Political Leader."
